Imagine creating a complete outfit from InStyle magazine’s “your LOOK” section for only $8 by shopping at a thrift store!

This month InStyle Magazine featured oversize sweaters paired with dressy flats.  They suggest that with everyone’s hectic schedule – work, family, life – it makes getting dressed up a seem like a chore.  An easy solution is the comfortable, easy, yet luxe knit sweater and some dressy flats.  To complete your look, pair with a beaded skirt or cigarette pants.

To recreate the look, we started with a chunky knit wool/cashmere blend sweater by Zhen Pai (made in Italy), chose a dark wash skinny denim by Paige Premium Denim Jeans and a pointy toe dressy flat by BCBGeneration, and finished the look with a vintage snakeskin clutch.

We were truly inspired by the “Find Your Perfect BUTTON-FRONT” article, February 2014, in InStyle magazine.  We know that many shoppers feel overwhelmed when stepping into a thrift store.  A great tip is to use a magazine article as a game plan for your shopping trip so you’re walking in with some direction.

One of our favorite outfits from our recent Goodwill trip was this spot-on recreation of a perfect winter/spring transitional look from InStyle magazine.  The blouse is by Faconnable ($149 retail) so that means it’s great quality, and at $5.99 it was a steal!  The khaki skirt can easily be paired with some tights and boots for those cold days we still have left and then paired with ballet flats for the warmer months.

We were also able to find several other oxfords that are going to be great staples for transitional weather.  Pair the button-ups with a puffy vest for cool days, shed the vest and roll up the sleeves for warm days!  You can’t go wrong with any of these shirts!

Wear this blouse alone, with a vest or a cardigan for different looks.

Here are some tips from InStyle magazine to keep in mind when looking for an oxford shirt:

  1. THE OUTFIT.   For a tailored, office-appropriate look, pair with a pencil skirt and fitted blazer.  On weekends, let the top go untucked with black leather skinnies or jeans and a statement necklace
  2. THE FIT.   Think slim but not tight.  “You shouldn’t be able to grab more than 2 inches of fabric when you pull the shirt away from your body” says Gretta Monahan, author of Style and the Successful Girl.
  3. THE DESIGN.   Traditional patterns work for 9-5.  Want to loosen things up a bit?  Try small florals or color blocking.
