Thrifting Trash to Treasure ~ Tory Burch Reva Shoes

We recently found this pair of snakeskin Tory Burch Reva flats for only $2 at a Family Thrift OUTLET Store, they originally retailed for $225.   The soles and insoles were in great condition, the snakeskin looked worn out and dry.   For a $2 investment it was worth our time to see if we could salvage them with some over the counter shoe products.   We didn’t have much “skin in the game” … lol

The snakeskin leather was dried out but after applying “KIWI” Color Shine / Brown it brought a lustrous, sheen.  Use a Sharpie to fill in all of the spots the shoe shine doesn’t cover.   They turned out quite fabulous!

While browsing through thrift stores we constantly come across high end leather items such as purses, shoes and boots that are either scuffed, scraped or show signs of wear, such as white marks and for those reasons they are priced at pennies on the dollar. We would like to share a quick DIY that we have used that is successful (most of the time!).   We found all of the following items for only $2 each at a Family Thrift (Outlet) Store.  They were all in need of a “makeover” but the original retail price tag makes it worth the effort:

  • Tory Burch Reva $225 flats
  • Steel toe motorcycle Double H Harness $169 boots
  • COACH cross body $145 purse.

A few tools in the arsenal to revive new life into our thrift stores finds would be “instant” liquid wax leather polish and a matching Sharpie marker.

Here are some of our favorite tips for shopping the Family Thrift Center Outlet stores.

  • “You don’t need to get there when they open on Thursdays.”  We usually arrive around 11 a.m., after the store has been open a few hours.  The store is really crowded until around noon, after that, it seems to calm down.   In our opinion, we prefer to go after the “morning rush.”  The employees are continually putting out new merchandise on Thursday and Friday, so you can find the “good stuff” for a couple of days before the stock starts running thin.
  • Some people say, “I never find anything!”  We go through hundreds, if not thousands, of items every time we go shopping in order to find one or two designer pieces of clothing.  Do not get frustrated when you walk into a thrift store and don’t find that “amazing deal” within a few minutes.  Jen and I spend hours going through every single hanger.  Sometimes we will come across a gorgeous piece of clothing within minutes, but it usually takes a good amount of time to find that treasure!   Never give up!  If you’re patient and dedicated, I promise that you will find a treasure!
  • There are no dressing rooms or mirrors.  Wear something comfortable so you can try a jacket or blouse over what you are wearing.
  • Finally, be prepared to shop with some highly competitive shoppers.  There are regulars who treat thrift shopping like a sport.
  • Amazing prices every week at Family Thrift Outlet Stores!

Amazing prices every week at Family Thrift Outlet Stores!

Family Thrift Center Outlet locations are where savvy shoppers come to save.  Each Thursday, new inventory comes in and every item is priced at just $2.00.  On Fridays, prices drop a quarter to $1.75 an item.  Then, each day after that, the price drops another 25 cents until Tuesdays, when prices drop to just 50 cents an item.  Prices drop another 25 cents on Wednesdays, when every item in the Outlet store costs only 25 cents!  With shopping this guilt free, you can’t lose!  Family Thrift Center Outlets sell men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, along with shoes, purses and accessories.  Store hours differ per location (all of the outlets close early on Wednesdays).

Oooops …we almost forgot to mention the thrift store “road kill” we found!

One thing that I love to do while traveling is to visit the local thrift stores.  I’ve been going to Hood River, Oregon for the past six years and have always wished that they had a Goodwill.  Alas, it’s a really small place and it seemed a Goodwill location would never be a reality.  Imagine my surprise when we arrived in town this summer and I spotted not only a Goodwill, but a Goodwill Boutique store!  To say I was giddy is an understatement.

My first impression was that the store looked like a little boutique, so far, so good.  I immediately spotted Dolce Gabanna, Coach, and AKRIS Punto.  Yay!  Next, I started looking at the prices…ouch.  I have to preface this by saying that we are soooo spoiled in Houston.  We have fabulous brands at our Goodwill for crazy low prices.  This boutique store definitely didn’t follow our Houston model.  I think the cheapest top I saw was a sleeveless Ann Taylor tank for $14.99.  I was definitely in sticker shock.

After spending about an hour shopping, I was able to come up with a few good buys.  My favorite items were a sparkly, Tory Burch tunic for $39.99 and a cute Ferragamo purse for $24.99.

Beyond these deals, I was really disappointed in the pricing.  Many of the items were being sold for the equivalent price of the item if you would have bought it brand new on clearance.

I love how they displayed their jewelry in an old book!

All in all, a nice, clean, well-organized store that’s a bit pricey.

Zara, Tory Burch (look-alike), Ralph Lauren … Fab Finds under $2

One of our favorite things to do is to shop at a thrift store that will challenge us.  Family Thrift Outlet Stores are absolutely and definitively challenging!    They are not glamorous, organized or located in the nicer areas of Houston.  We don’t care … it is fun for us!

You should see Jen and I … we have to find a shopping cart, that can sometimes take awhile and then we are right along with everyone else, digging in the racks.

Thursdays are always $1.75 …. every single thing in the entire store is only $1.75.

Here are a few tips on shopping at the Family Thrift OUTLET.   (the Thrift OUTLET store is not the same as the Thrift Store, click on link below for locations)

#1  This is the OUTLET store, this is not a regular Family Thrift Store.    This is the clearance store for items that did not sell in the Family Thrift Store(s).

#2 Another tip is that if you go to the OUTLET store, disregard the prices on the items. Regardless of what the price tag says, everything in the store is the price of the day ($1.75, $1.50, etc.).   The price tags may be confusing your first time there…just ignore them!

#3 NO Dressing rooms or mirrors.

#4 Examine the item very carefully, there are no returns!
