Here are some of our favorite tips for shopping the Family Thrift Center Outlet stores.

  • “You don’t need to get there when they open on Thursdays.”  We usually arrive around 11 a.m., after the store has been open a few hours.  The store is really crowded until around noon, after that, it seems to calm down.   In our opinion, we prefer to go after the “morning rush.”  The employees are continually putting out new merchandise on Thursday and Friday, so you can find the “good stuff” for a couple of days before the stock starts running thin.
  • Some people say, “I never find anything!”  We go through hundreds, if not thousands, of items every time we go shopping in order to find one or two designer pieces of clothing.  Do not get frustrated when you walk into a thrift store and don’t find that “amazing deal” within a few minutes.  Jen and I spend hours going through every single hanger.  Sometimes we will come across a gorgeous piece of clothing within minutes, but it usually takes a good amount of time to find that treasure!   Never give up!  If you’re patient and dedicated, I promise that you will find a treasure!
  • There are no dressing rooms or mirrors.  Wear something comfortable so you can try a jacket or blouse over what you are wearing.
  • Finally, be prepared to shop with some highly competitive shoppers.  There are regulars who treat thrift shopping like a sport.

Too Cheap Tuesdays in Pasadena … Longchamp, ZARA, Brooks Brothers & Black Label Ralph

A question that we hear all the time is “which outlet do you prefer to shop at?”  Honestly, we decide which store to shop at depending on where we are in Houston on a Thursday.   The stores are spread all throughout town (and all over Texas) so some of them are “geographically challenging” for us but we ALWAYS find a treasure, no matter what store we shop at.  Remember, it usually just takes time to look through everything.    Today we are showing you what we found at the Pasadena outlet store last year … and it was awesome so we will definitely stop by again when we are in the area!

Also, Houston is getting unusually cold weather the past few weeks and there are racks of coats for only $2!

When we share our “11 BEST Tips for Thrift Store Shopping”, you will see why we think the tweed jacket and dress are perfect staples for building a wardrobe.

  1. Don’t try to put together an outfit or you will get frustrated.  Look for individual pieces and then try to build an outfit.
  2. Focus on dresses, jackets and skirts…this is where you normally get the most value for your money.

ST JOHN vintage knit top and skirt for $5.45

What Was Your Favorite Find of the Week?

Pippa and I have what we call our Monday-morning Brain Storming Session.  We call each other, discuss what we have going on that week, talk about any new fashion trends we’ve noticed, browse through Pinterest, adding things to our shared boards, and then go to work shopping the thrift stores trying to make our ideas and inspirations come to life.

As we ended our last conversation we had to ask each other, “What was your favorite find of the week?”

This past week we spent an above average amount of time in a thrift store.   With a couple of hours to fill before our scheduled segment with “Stretch Your Dollar,” for the Pink Elephant Sale, we drove over to a Family Thrift Center retail store with the simple purpose of finding some great deals to show you.   (Check the blog tomorrow for our Fabulous Finds!)

Here is Jen’s favorite find:  St. John vintage tone-on-tone, chevron print skirt and top set.

(found at the Family Thrift Retail Store 920 North Durham Drive)

Here is what makes this Jen’s favorite find.  Jen found the skirt first, she knew it was high quality from the fabric but it did not have and tags in it so she left it (a fun fact, Jen has a strict high-end items only rule – it’s the only way she can keep her closet from overflowing).   A few minutes later, while browsing through the tops, she came across the matching tank, that still had the vintage St. John tag attached.   This knit is actually quite rare and not the typical St. John Collection knit.   The pattern was similar to MISSONI.   This entire set was $5.45.

She picked this out because she liked the style and color, nothing indicated it was crocodile.   After doing some research by the name “Sterling”   she realized that is was a highly sought after croc purse.   This is an item that continues to show up every few seasons as the “it-handbag!”   She found this bag for $2.

Pippa and I, try to live by our “thrifting tips” and with of our fab finds this week we nailed #1-11.   Here are our rules, sometimes we make an exception, but definitely great guidelines to follow!

Thrifting Tips:

  1. Don’t try to put together an outfit or you will get frustrated.  Look for individual pieces and then try to build an outfit.
  2. Focus on dresses, jackets and skirts…this is where you normally get the most value for your money.
  3. Skip lower end brands such as Target, Forever 21 and Walmart.
  4. Pay attention to fabrics…avoid synthetics.   Look for natural fibers such as silk, cotton and wool.
  5. You can usually find much better deals by “digging” than shopping from the boutique section of a thrift store.
  6. All thrift stores are not created equal.
  7. Look through Pinterest, magazines and fashion blogs to recreate trends.
  8. It doesn’t matter if you have 10 minutes or 2 hours, you can always find something you love!
  9. Pick an area of town and go to 3-4 thrift stores since they are often near each other.
  10. Hard Fast Rule:  NEVER pay more than 10% of retail price, we try to pay 5% or even less.
  11. Be open to finding anything!
Do you have any advice or tips that we need to add to our list?
Do you follow any guidelines when you thrift shop?

“The Fabulous THRIFT SHOP Challenge!” $995 Cardigan ~ vs ~ TOO CHEAP BLONDES

A question that we hear all the time is “aren’t all thrift stores full of old, out-of-style clothes?”    Yes, there are a few things that are better left in the past, but fashion can only change so much from season to season.   We found this amazing cashmere, lace-trimmed ST. JOHN cardigan at the Goodwill store in Willis, Texas for $5.99!

st john cashmere cheap

ST. JOHN changes up their cardigan a little each year…sometimes it’s a different color or they add beads or sequins to create a twist on this classic item.  The current 2014/15 season ST. JOHN COLLECTION features a similar black cardigan to the one we found at Goodwill with black lace trim and beading, for $995!   (I can honestly say that I prefer the thrift store cardigan!)

Ann Taylor is also featuring a similar style this season for $98.

“The Fabulous THRIFT SHOP Challenge!!!!!!!” “ST. JOHN” ~ vs ~ TOO CHEAP BLONDES Panther Style

st john knit sweater blog

Trends are recycled over and over, a new color or different cut … longer, shorter, more or less texture.   We found this ST. JOHN COLLECTION sweater this summer at a thrift store for $1.75 and imagine our surprise when a very similar sweater was shown at Nordstroms and Saks Fifth Avenue this fall!    The biggest difference is the price tag …. $695 vs $1.75.

Yes, the current version is a different color and there is only one panther instead of three of them.   This shows that you can find something in a thrift store, remove the shoulder pads, add some skinny pants and you have a modern look.

St John knits Sweater for $1.75

Jen and I decided to brave the crowds and shop a Family Thrift OUTLET store on a Thursday.  We found a pair of Black Label Ralph Lauren pants, Longchamp Tote, Brooks Brothers Jacket and a St John sweater all priced at only $1.75 each!

We are being honest when we tell you that this is not easy thrift store shopping.  The aisles are jammed, the lines are long and its not that organized once all the shoppers start going down the rows.

#1  This is the OUTLET store, this is not a regular Family Thrift Store.    This is the clearance store for items that did not sell in the Family Thrift Store(s).

#2 Another tip is that if you go to the OUTLET store, disregard the prices on the items. Regardless of what the price tag says, everything in the store is the price of the day ($1.75, $1.50, etc.).   The price tags may be confusing your first time there…just ignore them!

#3 NO Dressing rooms or mirrors.

(HERE is a link for a list of both the regular and the outlet store locations: HERE)

  • Thursday $1.75
  • Friday $1.50
  • Saturday $1.25
