Here are a few past articles of shopping with our contest winners!

We had a last minute cancellation with one of our recent contest winners and, looking through the entries, one story stood out.  Candyce was starting her career as an Academic Director and needed a mature, professional look.  We thought this was quite appropriate, considering it was in August, right before school was going to start and teacher style is our #1 request.

Candyce was so bubbly and enthusiastic about life, I knew the second I met her that she would be fun to shop with!   As we started shopping, she kept saying things weren’t her style UNTIL I started showing her similar outfits on Pinterest.  Then she started getting really excited about all of the possibilities!   She decided that she loves sun dresses, cardigans, leggings and longer, loose blouses.

Here is a picture of her talking about everything that we found and how we used these photo’s for inspiration!

To top it off we found this pair of COACH blue flats in excellent condition, these retail for $150+.

Candyce has her own blog and here she shares part of her story.  It was meant to be to shop with her!

“Ok so here’s how it all happened. About a month ago I was talking to one of my best friends Ramona about revamping and maturing my look. I stated that I need to start dressing like an almost 30 year old Academic Director. She told me that I have a unique style and that I should still embrace it but enhance it with matured pieces. So I said you’re right and I pray that I could get help from someone to find those pieces to complete my matured look. On my phone when you go to google search it will post random post from sites that you have visited before. So last Monday I saw a post from Too Cheap Blondes about a contest that they were having and to submit a small paragraph stating why you should win. I stated that I need help maturing my look and how much I respect and love what they do etc.. I wrote it down on my Tuesday to-do list and sent it off with a prayer Tuesday morning. A couple of hours later, I received a text from Pippa asking if I could meet her to shop with her. So after I stopped screaming with excitement I texted her back saying yes ma’am! I thought it was a joke at first LOL! So on Wednesday morning, still clueless that I won the contest, I woke up energized and excited to receive help shopping. God always supplies your needs and desires that He sees fit to bless you with when you are doing your part. He will bless you in abundance!

I am beyond grateful and thankful to Pippa, Michelle and Jennifer that gave their time to help me out and for others as well. You ladies really touched my heart ♡! It wasn’t until the very end that I realized that I won the contest, I thought that she was just going to give me some shopping pointers and help select outfits for me to purchase. Pippa selected dresses and other items that I would of never took the time to look at because it wasn’t my “normal” style. I thought about how God does the same thing with us when He designed and created us for our purpose. Many times we “look past” things that we think don’t fit our feelings and way of life and end up missing out on those hidden treasures that God created just for us. Pippa found a nice pair of Coach shoes that were my size and I would of never found them if it hadn’t been for her. The funny part about those shoes was I passed right by them and they were right in front of my face the whole time. ”

$1,170 FENDI Satin Baguette Found for $4.94!

Thank you readers!  You guys give us the BEST compliments and make our job so rewarding!  A few weeks ago while we were shopping, a reader came up and introduced herself to us.  Her story was so touching, we felt the need to share it with you!  She was a recently divorced woman who needed to go back into the workforce after 20 years of being a stay-at-home mom.  She explained how she felt overwhelmed with the thought of spending the last of her savings on an updated wardrobe, knowing how she dressed would not only affect how she felt about herself, but also would provide much needed courage in finding a job.    She could not thank us enough as she described how our tips on looking for quality items (shopping for basic pieces that you can mix and match, not just looking for outfits) helped her to appear professional, confident, and feeling the best she had in years.  The best part, she said, was purchasing it all for pennies on the dollar!

Another reader who started following our blog last year sent us this heartfelt message:

“I am on a Thrifting High!  This is maybe my best find yet. A vintage Fendi Baguette Bag. $4.94 cents!  I have learned so much by following your blog.  You have given everybody such good hints on how to thrift and find amazing things.   I love seeing all of your great finds!  I could have been doing this for years but it took “The Too Cheap Blondes” for inspiration.  Thank you!”

She found this authentic, satin and leather FENDI Baguette bag at a Family Thrift Center store (not an outlet store) for $4.94!  Over 1,000 versions of the Baguette bag have been created.  Here is the almost identical version for $1,170!

Authentic FENDI baguette found at Family Thrift Center for $4.95

Authentic FENDI Baguette found at Family Thrift Center for $4.94

This FENDI satin baguette retailed for $1170

This FENDI satin Baguette retailed for $1,170

The reader took the bag to Neiman Marcus for authentication (yes, it was real!) and the sales lady nearly fell over laughing when she told her she paid only $4.94!   The sales lady used some leather cleaner and cleaned the bag for her.  Our reader said the cost of the leather cleaner far outweighed the cost of the $4.94 bag!

The FENDI Baguette is a favorite among celebrities, check out of few different versions we found.

Here are our Best Thrift Store Tips!

Fendi Satin Baguette Bag $1,170.00 (USD)

The holidays are the time of the year when you reconnect with family and friends.  I love getting Christmas cards and seeing how kids change so much each year.  This year, when I opened up an annual Christmas card from an old friend, I immediately noticed from their family picture that they doubled in size with more kids and it was not a multiple birth situation.  Of course, I had to call and ask what happened.  They shared with me how they have opened up their hearts and home to children in the foster care system.  I immediately thought of how Jen and I can help them with our “thrifting talents.”  We tasked ourselves with finding name brand clothing that was in perfect condition, with no stains, tears or obvious wear to donate to this deserving family.  What better place to look for these items than the Family Thrift Outlet Stores, where everything is priced at only $2!   Click HERE for a map of their locations, all over Texas and St Louis, MO.

Kids grow really fast. Sometimes it seems like they wear an item one time before it’s already too small.  One of the best ways to spend less on clothes for children is to buy secondhand. Kids aren’t likely to notice when things are gently used, and chances are that you are purchasing an items that has also only been worn one time.

A few of the name brands that we found include:

  • North Face
  • Nike
  • Carters
  • Patagonia
  • Lands End
  • Calvin Klein

(we found these at the Hillcroft store)

Save money on children's clothing at Family Thrift Stores.

Save money on children’s clothing at Family Thrift Outlet Stores ($2 each).

Look for higher end name brands and fabrics, they wear better.  Click HERE for more of our Thrift Tips.

When I asked my friends how they had come to the decision to open their home, they had an answer that I just had to share with all of you!

“We are beyond blessed by you thinking of us and our kids and so thankful! God really nudged our hearts about 3 or 4 years ago for orphans in our community. James describes true religion as caring for widows and orphans and we knew that answering the call to say “yes” to orphans and foster kids in our community was God’s will and the best way to live out our faith as a family. Every child deserves to feel the love of a Mom and Dad and family and so many kids are in foster care not by any fault of their own! Our hearts have been broken, and forever changed when we said “yes” to the call of God to step up and help kids in our community! It’s been a yes that has not been “convenient” or easy, but has brought such joy and blessing and eternal rewards! We are so thankful and blessed beyond measure to answer the call!”

Thrift Shopping for Holiday Looks

We, Jen and Pippa, being named the “Cheapest Housewives in Houston,” have always left the weekends open for family.  This past Saturday, however, we made an exception to film with Houston’s KPRC Channel 2 Morning Show with Courtney Zavala.  It was a fun segment featuring holiday wear found at thrift stores!

We felt very talk show “official” sitting on a couch!

Here are a few of the tips we shared:

  • We shopped exclusively at thrift shops.
  • You might not find it all the first time, make several trips.
  • Thrifting is a wardrobe-building process.
  • Holiday attire is usually only worn once, which means it’s usually practically brand new!  Try to save money on these pricey pieces!

I reasoned out why to not spend the $1.50 on this woven leather top ….

“Really?  I don’t think my girls will even wear this … How would you style it?”

When I got home and had a hard time even finding a picture to compare or find value, I realized it was actually a quite amazing top, with hours and hours of craftsmanship, that starts at $100’s and goes into the $1000’s …. gulp, I did NOT buy this.

OK, yes, you heard me right … I left this top there 🙁

Here are a few tips on shopping at the Family Thrift OUTLET.   (the Thrift OUTLET store is not the same as the Thrift Store, click on link below for locations)

#1  This is the OUTLET store, this is not a regular Family Thrift Store.    This is the clearance store for items that did not sell in the Family Thrift Store(s).

#2 Another tip is that if you go to the OUTLET store, disregard the prices on the items. Regardless of what the price tag says, everything in the store is the price of the day ($1.75, $1.50, etc.).   The price tags may be confusing your first time there…just ignore them!

#3 NO Dressing rooms or mirrors.

#4 Examine the item very carefully, there are no returns!

  • Friday $1.50
  • Saturday $1.25

Kate Spade, Lilly Pulitzer and Smathers & Branson were our Favorite finds of the Day!

Jen and I went to the Pink Elephant Rummage Sale (the oldest in Houston) on Friday finding some amazing deals but you KNOW we are super cheap so after that we went thrift store shopping to save even more!

We really didn’t find much but the few things we came across were AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

Jen found this needlepoint fish belt by Smathers & Branson.  This belt retails for $165 and she found it for $2.99 @ Goodwill Thrift Store.

Smathers & Branson needlepoint belt retails for $165, we found @ Goodwill for $2.99

Smathers & Branson needlepoint belt retails for $165, we found @ Goodwill for $2.99

Next we found this Black & White Authentic Kate Spade tote, trimmed in leather for $17.99, we found a similar yet smaller style online via Nordstroms for $298.   (we really are becoming way to cheap, neither one of us bought this bag … now looking at the pictures I wish I would have!)

Similar Kate Spade (smaller) tote retails @ Nordstroms for $298, we found it at Goodwill for $17.99

Similar Kate Spade (smaller) tote retails @ Nordstroms for $298, we found it at Goodwill for $17.99

Our last stop of the day was at a Value Village, they were having a 50% off sale on sleeveless dresses.  I found this Kate Spade One Shoulder dress for $4.00 … oh wait, 50% off makes it $2.00!!!!!!!!!!   This dress retailed for $248.

We gave it to a local Houston celebrity and can’t wait to see it on her!

This Lilly Pulitzer dress retailed for $248, we found it at Value Village for $4 but WAIT ... it was 50% off sleeveless dresses so this beauty was only $2!!!!!!!!
