You know how we love to share with you all the thrifty places to shop in Houston and Epic Thrift Store is a new store that just opened up in the 1960/I-45 area.   We happened to drop by on a day when everything was 50% off everything in the store, so the tags you see were half of that amount!

Buffalo Exchange Houston

Buffalo Exchange Houston

If you’re older than 35, then, after reading the title to this blog post, you are probably thinking to yourself either A: What is Buffalo Exchange, or B: Hello?  I’m not 19 and a hipster, and neither are the Too Cheap Blondes, so why are they reviewing this place?  Honestly, until a couple of years ago, I was firmly in the B category.  I used to frequent Buffalo Exchange in my early 20s and although it was a little funky, I always found some cute, trendy pieces for a great deal.  Let me tell you, times have changed!  Pippa and I, while not regulars at Buffalo Exchange, definitely hit it up every now and then and we are never disappointed.

Buffalo has become my go-to place when I need a high-end outfit, and I just can’t come up with it from my Goodwill or Family Thrift trips.  Yes, you read that right, high-end.  Buffalo Exchange is a mecca for high-end labels and they are cheap!  My all-time favorite Buffalo find is this amazing Oscar de la Renta pink cocktail dress that was worn by Leighton Meester (Blair) on Gossip Girl.  Keep in mind, this dress retails for upwards of $3,000!  I picked up this dress for $50!

gossipgirlprettyinpinkI snapped a few pictures while shopping the other day and here is just a sampling of the brands and great prices that Buffalo Exchange has to offer:

donaldplinerBE

Donald Pliner Western Couture Collection mules for $35, retailed for $400.

ChloeshoesBE

Chloe leather flats for $48, retailed for $500.

FendishoesBE

Fendi heels for $65, retailed for $500+.

DVFBuffaloExchange

Brand new Diane Von Furstenberg silk top for $35.

NorthFaceBuffalo

Brand new North Face jacket for $25.

gryphonbuffalo

Brand new Gryphon silk and sequin top for $35, retailed for $200+.

HerveLeger

Herve Leger dress for $47 (retailed for $1,000+) and Shelli Segal dress for $26.50.

I regularly run across Tory Burch, Burberry, Kate Spade, Lilly Pulitzer, Citizens of Humanity, Ted Baker, and the list goes on and on of expensive, high-end brands.  Most items will run you between $15 – $40.  While Buffalo is still the place to go to when you need something quirky, like a vintage fringe jacket or funky 70s outfit, in my opinion, they are definitely more weighted towards on-trend, high-end clothing, rather than the young teenager styles that I used to associate them with.

As an added bonus, Buffalo will buy your used, on-trend, quality label clothing from you for cash on the spot!  I regularly sell my items back to Buffalo to recoup some of my investment.  A win/win in my book!

I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed with your trip to Buffalo Exchange.  Just a note, I’ve only visited the Buffalo Exchanges in Houston, but they are a national chain and can be found throughout the U.S.  You can find a list of their locations here:  http://www.buffaloexchange.com/locations

Happy shopping and let us know what you find!

My favorite restaurant!

San Antonio is one of my (Pippa) favorite mini-vacations in Texas!   It is a 3-4 hour drive from Houston, depending on traffic.   I always include a trip to a Goodwill store but here are a few of my other favorite things.

The San Antonio Riverwalk is so beautiful, especially early in the morning when most people are still asleep!

No trip is ever complete without a meal at Boudros!   We prefer to eat right on the river so I always call days in advance for a reservation, click HERE for their information.

My favorite restaurant!

We did try a new restaurant (sorry, I did not notice the name but it is right across from Boudros, at the base of the bridge) and I had something new … Scottish eggs … DELICIOUS!!!!!!!

One more favorite, MUST TRY, restaurant is the Guenther House.  I will just tell you upfront, expect to wait a minimum of an hour, but it is so worth it!  They do serve coffee and  the house is also a museum / store plus you are in the historic district of San Antonio, so you can walk around and explore for a while.  Also, you can get a pastry to-go, while you are waiting to get in and drink your coffee.  The pecan sticky roll does sell out first, can you see why?   (for those readers who want to do an online tour of the house, click HERE)

Casserole dish for $2.99 at Goodwill

Casserole dish for $2.99 at Goodwill

I always work on stocking up on dishes, platters, plates and serving ware from Goodwill, for when I take someone a meal.   A similar size aluminum disposable dish was $3.49 at the grocery store, so I was excited to find this perfect size casserole dish for $2.99.  (you can’t say “ewww gross” about a used dish … you eat of dinnerware from a restaurant that 1000’s of people have used!)  Don’t you think that food looks more appetizing in a ceramic dish?

Since the first store opened in 1981, they have raised over $3,000,000 to enrich the lives of thousands of under privileged children living in the Houston area. A portion of every sale will go to Fite-N-Chance Children’s Foundation Inc.,which gives kids a hand-up instead of a hand-out, providing assistance to children with special needs and college scholarships to hard working students.
