12 items for a total of $24!

With the $25.00 Thrift Store Challenge, we set out to see what we could find at one of the Family Thrift OUTLET stores.  Since the entire store is priced at only $2.00, you feel like a kid in a candy store!  (Everything is only $2.00 on Thursdays, prices goes down $0.25 each day until they close on Wednesdays at noon to empty out all of the unsold merchandise and restock with all new inventory.)   You truly never know what you are going to find, and that my friend, is the most exciting thing about thrifting . . . some days we will find an abundance of amazing shoes, another trip will be all dresses, the next visit sweaters or just coats.   Of course there are even the days that we find nothing, absolutely not one thing!  On those rare days we don’t get frustrated and stop thrift shopping . . . no way!  We know there is always a good thrift haul just waiting right around the corner!

The thrift gods blessed us on this particular day, we found a huge haul of casual clothes, 12 items for only $24!!!!!!!

A fisherman’s sweater looks so comfortable and warm for the winter.  I am not sure if you can justify a $299 purchase on something you will only wear a few times each year … this is exactly why we LOVE shopping at thrift stores!  You can try that occasional look for pennies on the dollar.

Start with determining your style!  Sometimes that is hard to do but if you go through Pinterest you can create look books, pin pictures of what you like to your own personal style board.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • What colors look best on you?
  • What shapes flatter your body?
  • What fits your lifestyle?

Every so often we do a “Thrift Shopping Contest with Jen & Pippa” here in Houston.  Of course, our readers from all over the U.S. feel super left out and we keep hearing, “We wish we could shop with you!”  So, we came up with this great idea of doing a virtual shopping contest.  Great in theory, but there were a few challenges.  First, it is hard to shop for someone when you have never met them and that is why we asked our winner from Chicago to create a “Pinterest Look Book” so we would have clear direction as to what her tastes were.  Second, our winner was plus size, and the options for plus sized, stylish clothing are somewhat limited.  After working on this project for many weeks, and receiving positive feedback from our winner, we can definitely see that this proves that shopping with inspiration and a clear sense of your fashion needs is an effective way to shop!

BTW, we shopped at the Family Thrift OUTLET stores and we found everything for only $2.00 each!

Our winner’s inspiration Pinterest photo is on the left side in each of these pictures and our thrift store best match is next to it.

A note from our winner, Janine P.:

“As the “Thrift Shopping Contest with Jen and Pippa” winner I was extremely excited from the beginning. I also knew there would be some challenges which these ladies overcame with great fashion….no pun intended. It was not just about being a plus size but really having “folks” shop for you that have never met you before. I would suggest for anyone to have a “look book” of all the possible items you want to find in the thrift store.

I am getting my contest winnings ready to go to the dry cleaners. After this experience with Jen and Pippa I am going to create a separate Pinterest board of all the items I am still looking for in the thrift stores. As I have decided it might take some time but it is worth the time. I believe it is not about the quantity you acquire while thrift shopping, however, the quality pieces.

Thank you Jen and Pippa your efforts were steller and I hope to meet you someday, the next time I am in Houston. Soon…if the ladies will let me…I will be sending in some photos of me wearing the wonderful items they picked from the heart.

Take care and happy shopping everyone.

We have chosen the winner of the U.S. Thrift Store Shopping Contest with Jen and Pippa , virtual Family Thrift Center Outlet shopping trip … Janine P, of the windy city of Chicago!

We read each and every one of your entries and you made it so hard to choose!  Your stories were amazing,  many were about overcoming adversity, some in the middle of a crisis, a few health challenges, some of you entered for a friend, others wanted to learn about fashion and a lot of you just wanted to have us thrift shop for you.   We will definitely be working on a story about helping people get out of the yoga pant rut, this was the number one dilemma we heard from you.

Congratulations Janine P!  We can’t wait to see your style board on Pinterest and start shopping for you!  We will keep you posted on this virtual shopping trip and stay tuned for the next contest.

While getting my hair done yesterday, reading through “Life & Style” magazine (keeping up with the latest Kardashian drama) I came across this article “Summer’s Hottest Bags”.  Just a few weeks ago I found this MAURIZIO TAIUTI floral hand painted leather tote, while thrifting, at first I thought it was a “waxed” canvas tote but looking at the tag “Genuine Leather, Made In Italy” … I had to google it and do a bit of research.  This bag originally retailed for $250 and we found it for only $2.00 at The Family Thrift OUTLET store in Houston.

Top Cheap Tips for Shopping and Decorating with Thrift Store Finds

Tip No. 1:  Keep an open mind for anything and everything

Use Pinterest or magazines when your shopping for inspiration.   Most things that look like junk when decorated correctly make things appear cool and chic!  This unique fossil, found for only .99 at Goodwill Houston,  is a perfect example. “Definitely the oldest thing I’ve ever bought @goodwillhouston, by oh, about 65 million years. I couldn’t pass it up….because #itwas99cents!”   Follow us on Pinterest HERE.

Tip No. 2:  Know your style.  You have to know what you like and don’t like – otherwise everything just looks like junk.  I LOVE sparkle!  Anything metallic such as glass, silver & gold.

Don’t be afraid to repurpose!  If you fall in love with a unique item but you do not need or want it for its intended purpose, get creative or “google” it to see what others have done with it.

Here is a perfect example of finding sparkly, unique things to help you organize an area.  The “tray” is really a small framed mirror, found for only $2.92 @ Family Thrift Store.  I am totally in love with the silver creamer, which I filled with Q-tips. The gaudy gold jewelry box which is a perfect asset for this vignette, then add a few more glass accessories , not even sure what to put in them yet but they complete the look I was going for.

Last year we found this little vintage Ferragamo handbag at the Family Thrift Outlet store for $2.   The leather was in such poor condition we almost passed on it until we decided it was at least worth salvaging for the chain strap, which could be used as a belt or necklace.  CLICK HERE to read that blog post.

This week we attended the 2015 reNew and reDo Fashion Chairs Kickoff Party at Neiman Marcus, requiring a step up from our everyday attire.   Jen decided she was going to wear this red dress by “Pink Tartan”, she had found it at Goodwill for $9.99 (similar retails for $395 at Saks Fifth Avenue).  We couldn’t decide on what necklace she should wear, then she remembered that little red handbag.  She removed the chain from the back and put it around her neck.  We instantly knew it was a winner when we saw the gold platform shoes!   Of course, the handbag was also a perfect match with her dress!

Do you remember this AWFUL 2 piece outfit we thrifted a few weeks ago?  HERE

We so wish we would have a taken a picture of this top and skirt together so you could see how .. ummm .. unflattering and ugly it was worn together, most people would pass over it.  Recognizing the incredible quality of the silk, lace and the beadwork, we knew it was worth trying to salvage, we both immediately pulled out our phones, going directly to Pinterest (click Here to follow us) to see how to style it as separate pieces!   Priced at only $2.00 per item (at Family Thrift Outlet Store) we did not have too much to lose.

This is our kind of makeover … scissors, tape and 3 minutes!  We found this London Fog Trench Coat at the Family Thrift Outlet for $2, cut off the sleeves, taped the seams up, so easy!

We might make this look easy but some of these looks are quite challenging and as you can see we do not always hit the mark.

When trying to recreate an outfit, it does not need to be a perfect match here are a few of our TIPS:

  • If you can’t copy the entire outfit, take out one or two pieces to match the look, start with color and shape.
  • Try to keep the elements the same.
  • Shop your own closet first.
  • Be creative and improvise!
