During our trip to Phoenix to preview Family Thrift Store ($2 outlet), we partnered with them to help dress a group of young women from Neighborhood Ministries’ (“NM”) Education for Life (“EFL”) program.

Education For Life offers comprehensive education assistance to over 100 at-risk youth, making a long-term commitment to their growth and development. The goal of EFL is to see youth succeed by providing an educational and mentoring support system aimed to decrease deviant behavior such as truancy, drug abuse and gang activity and increase educational aspirations.  They support their youth every step of the way, providing mentors, tutoring, and even scholarship assistance.  As one of the members said, “NM was there for me and my family whenever we needed anything, help financially, food, clothes, whatever. NM was always there, keeping me busy and off the streets.”

Our first objective when working with the girls was to figure out what their fashion style was and assess their fashion needs by asking, “What is your typical day like?, Does it require professional or casual dress?, or Are you a stay-at-home mom who needs more practical, yet still stylish clothing?”   One of the girls was starting a job as a legal assistant so she needed a more professional wardrobe, another wanted a more mature look than her regular t-shirt and leggings, and most of the others needs a professional wardrobe for work.   We were able to show the girls that just because they may have a small budget for clothing, they can still look professional and put together for a fraction of the cost simply by knowing what their fashion needs are committing to a style.  Once the girls decided what their needs were, we were able to show them how to find good quality items, which means we showed them that even though the styles were trendy, it’s not always a wise investment to spend your budget on cheap quality clothing, even from a thrift store.  Thrift stores are full of high-quality garments if you know how to find them.  We taught them to look at labels and shop by fabrics rather than by brand.

Our next strategy was to show the girls how to shop for basic pieces that can be worn multiple ways.  This blue blazer is a perfect example of a multi-use item, it can be worn both to the office or with jeans as shown.

diy downton abbey thrift store shlp halloween costume ideas

I love Downton Abbey . . . a lot . . . maybe too much.  If you haven’t seen the series, I highly recommend it. One of my favorite aspects of the show is that it is set in the early 1900s, which happens to be one of my favorite eras in fashion EVER.  It is less fancy than the 1800s, but more fancy than the 1920s, making it perfect!  Given that this was a time when people (at least the wealthy) got very dressed up for dinner every night, there is no shortage of gorgeous dresses featured in the show.

If you have dreams of looking like one of the Crawleys, don’t worry if you don’t have a true early 20th century vintage dress (those are VERY expensive).  Remember, you do not have to have a perfect match, you are going for a style or resemblance of the era.

With a few extra touches you can complete your Crawley look:

  • A strand or two of pearls always adds elegance
  • Add a fur collar over a conservative dress
  • A modest hair band or tiara to your modern crimped hair, bobby-pins were all the rage
  • Small and tiny handbags were appropriate for the era
  • Long gloves that cover the elbow

Jen was able to put together this vintage look by finding a Shelly Segal silk with velvet burnout dress for $9.99 at a Goodwill store in Houston.  She also found a vintage beaded shawl for $12 and vintage satin gloves for $5 at the Catholic Charity Guild that she put over the non-vintage dress that instantly transformed her 90s-era dress into a very authentic-looking early 1900s ensemble.  To complete the look, Jen found some low heeled, sensible shoes at Target, added some costume jewelry from Forever 21, a fake cigarette with holder from Spirit Halloween, and finally added a hat with a sequin headband and broach on it to bring it all together.

Jen not only looked, but felt, much better in her high-quality costume pieces than she ever would have in a poor quality, cheaply made, bagged Halloween costume.  An added bonus . . . no one even came close to having the same costume as she did that night.

Tips for putting together the Best DIY Halloween Costume from the thrift store:

  • Don’t pay over of 10% of retail (we didn’t spend over $10 on any of our clothing!).

  • Look for higher end luxurious fabrics such as silk, velvets, and brocades.

  • Shop with several themes in mind.

  • Find a dress or article of clothing you really like, do a search on your phone for costume ideas.

  • Think outside the box …

phoenix outlet thrift store shop cheap

Who in their right mind would hop on a plane and travel over 1,000 miles to go thrift shopping?  Well, the Too Cheap Blondes, that’s who!  We recently traveled from Houston, Texas to Phoenix, Arizona to check out the Family Thrift Store Outlet, where, like their Houston counterpart, opens each Thursday with over 30,000 new items all starting at just $2.00 each!   The Phoenix store has one major thing that’s different from Houston though . . . and it’s huge.  The Phoenix Family Thrift Store Outlet sells housewares as well as clothing starting at just $2.00!  Friends, we’re talking furniture, coffee makers, fans, bicycles, toys, dishes, etc. . . and several items we saw were still brand new in the box.  It takes a special kind of thrift store to get the Queens of Thrift flustered and let me tell you, we were absolutely beside ourselves!

These pictures represent only a fraction of the amazing treasures this store holds, from couture fashion to fabulous household items, the Phoenix Family Thrift Store Outlet really does have it all.  I’m thinking next time we need to road trip there with a U-Haul in tow!

Now, just a caveat, about Family Thrift Store Outlet:

  • Some people say, “I never find anything!”  We go through hundreds, if not thousands, of items every time we go shopping in order to find one or two designer pieces of clothing.  Do not get frustrated when you walk into a thrift store and don’t find that “amazing deal” within a few minutes.  Sometimes we will come across a gorgeous piece of clothing within minutes, but it usually takes a good amount of time to find that treasure!   Never give up!  If you’re patient and dedicated, I promise that you will find a treasure!
  • There are no dressing rooms or mirrors.  Wear something comfortable so you can try a jacket or blouse over what you are wearing.
  • Finally, be prepared to shop with some highly competitive shoppers.  There are regulars who treat thrift shopping like a sport.
  • Organized by categories (men’s, women’s, children’s) not by colors, styles or sizes.   The savings are passed along to you, but it is up to you to dig for your treasure
