We were recently contacted by a national magazine to contribute to an article (slated to publish in October) about the best shopping advice ever.  Of course, our advice centered on the best tips for shopping at thrift stores.  We submitted our tips, but when they asked us for our professional head shot, we told them we realized we’d never had professional photos shot!   Our first plan of action to remedy the problem was to call in some of Houston’s best professionals to make us look fab . . . Quy Tran, the photographer who did our Yahoo! wedding shoot, and Jessica Mussleman (our Yahoo! bride), an Arbonne makeup artist.

The morning of the shoot, my home was transferred into a studio of sorts.  We were so fortunate that the glam squad came to us, and Jessica not only did our makeup, but gave us a full tutorial!  The breakfast area became the makeup “green room” area and the living room was transformed into a photo studio!

Quy Tran is one of the most professional photographers you will ever meet!  He is always on-time and the quality of his photos are top notch, plus he brought the studio to us!

During the shoot we not only wanted “professional” pictures but something a little more goofy . . . like us.  We aren’t attorney’s or doctors, we are the queen’s of thrift!  Have you seen some of our “twinning” pictures we post on Facebook?

After looking at the first round of pictures, Jen pointed out that they looked a little stiff, which is so not like us.  She asked me, “do you have any crowns?”  At first, I said no (seriously, who has princess crowns just lying around their house!), but then I thought about it for a minute and you know what, I did have a few sparkly crowns tucked away.  I guess I will have a hard time explaining to my neighbors why Jen and I were all “glammed” up at 11:00 a.m., standing in my front yard with crowns on our heads, getting our picture taken!

While getting my hair done yesterday, reading through “Life & Style” magazine (keeping up with the latest Kardashian drama) I came across this article “Summer’s Hottest Bags”.  Just a few weeks ago I found this MAURIZIO TAIUTI floral hand painted leather tote, while thrifting, at first I thought it was a “waxed” canvas tote but looking at the tag “Genuine Leather, Made In Italy” … I had to google it and do a bit of research.  This bag originally retailed for $250 and we found it for only $2.00 at The Family Thrift OUTLET store in Houston.

When it comes to bags, brown is the new black.

According to InStyle, “If there’s one trend that dominated the spring runways, the ’70s took the cake.  Jeans got wider, jackets came in luxe suede, and bags, well, those popped up in the most delicious shades of brown, ranging from chocolate to cognac to sand and beyond.  The hue has never looked sexier or more luxe, splashed across slouchy hobos, tidy crossbodies, and knockaround buckets.”  Click HERE for the original article!

The handbags that InStyle featured ranged from $148 – $3,200.

Walking into a thrift store with a current fashion magazine is honestly one of the best shopping days you will ever have!   It reminds me of being a teen-ager going on a scavenger hunt door-to-door … you never knew what you were going to find.  Ok, I know its not going to a beautiful store where everything is laid out perfectly, all coordinated by size and color but having a magazine will help give you guidance when looking for items … plus it is sooo much FUN to find a treasure for pennies on the dollar!

Wow … who knew these long, puffer jackets were so in style!  HUGE regrets that we left that jacket behind, we live in Houston so it is hard to think that we would ever be that cold.   Plus we have to live up to our name “Too Cheap Blondes”, seriously, we couldn’t spend $2 for that one cold day!

InStyle Magazine your Look

InStyle Magazine your Look

We were truly inspired by the “Find Your Perfect BUTTON-FRONT” article, February 2014, in InStyle magazine.  We know that many shoppers feel overwhelmed when stepping into a thrift store.  A great tip is to use a magazine article as a game plan for your shopping trip so you’re walking in with some direction.

"Too Cheap Blondes" found similar button front blouses at Goodwill for $5.99 each!

“Too Cheap Blondes” found similar button front blouses at Goodwill for $5.99 each!

One of our favorite outfits from our recent Goodwill trip was this spot-on recreation of a perfect winter/spring transitional look from InStyle magazine.  The blouse is by Faconnable ($149 retail) so that means it’s great quality, and at $5.99 it was a steal!  The khaki skirt can easily be paired with some tights and boots for those cold days we still have left and then paired with ballet flats for the warmer months.

We were also able to find several other oxfords that are going to be great staples for transitional weather.  Pair the button-ups with a puffy vest for cool days, shed the vest and roll up the sleeves for warm days!  You can’t go wrong with any of these shirts!

Wear this blouse alone, with a vest or a cardigan for different looks.

Here are some tips from InStyle magazine to keep in mind when looking for an oxford shirt:

  1. THE OUTFIT.   For a tailored, office-appropriate look, pair with a pencil skirt and fitted blazer.  On weekends, let the top go untucked with black leather skinnies or jeans and a statement necklace
  2. THE FIT.   Think slim but not tight.  “You shouldn’t be able to grab more than 2 inches of fabric when you pull the shirt away from your body” says Gretta Monahan, author of Style and the Successful Girl.
  3. THE DESIGN.   Traditional patterns work for 9-5.  Want to loosen things up a bit?  Try small florals or color blocking.

Foreign Affair Trend

This months issue of InStyle magazine, September 2013 (page 402) previews a trend “Foreign Affairs”.  Enticing pictures show you elaborately embroidered, richly patterned, or gilded and encrusted items.   Trying to create at least one of these looks from a thrift store, we brought along a magazine or folder of “Pinterest” ideas, this gives us some direction with our shopping trip.

Do you ever use inspirational photo’s or ideas when you shop at a thrift store?  Let us know 🙂

I think this purse is a perfect example of how to stay with this current trend but also think outside of the box!

$4.99 for this hand-tooled leather handbag, it was quite stunning!

We always take "inspiration" ideas with us when we shop at a Thrift Store!

We always take “inspiration” ideas with us when we shop at a Thrift Store!

Here are a few REASONS TO LOVE this Trend!

Elaborately embroidered, richly patterned, or gilded and encrusted with jewels, these clothes are pure escapism. Slipping into them transports you to another time and place (China! Italy! Brazil!), and they radiate a sense of refinement and adventure that makes you feel like a member of the jet set.
HOW TO WORK IT Some of the looks are a nod to a nation, while others are a postcard for it. The subtle references tend to be more universally appealing (and wearable). Adopt a when-in-Rome (or Beijing, or Rio) approach: Pile on big gold necklaces or long gemstone earrings (as long as they look chic not like a Halloween costume) with black pants and a turtleneck. Hair and makeup should have a regal sophistication: Part hair in the middle or pull it back, and go for bold brows or dramatic, kohl-rimmed eyes.

Quilted Mini

$425  InStyle Magazine vs. $6.99  Thrift Store

Jen and Pippa are here to show you HOW you can find all of these incredible looks from a thrift store!

This month’s issue of InStyle magazine, September 2013 (page 344) has an article “Three Ways / Quilted Mini” that we recreated all from a thrift store.

The skirt is a Philip Lim for $425, we found a similar Marc Jacobs skirt at Goodwill for $6.99.

InStyle Magazine gave a few more ideas for styling this skirt:

  • Pair with a collared pullover, tights and oxfords for a collegiate vibe.
  • Play on texture and scale.  Moto Jacket and shiny jewelry will reference the abundant metal hardware.
  • Try a Modernized trenchcoat in tone-on-tone.
  • Black extras, such as tights will link it all together.
