silver thrift store finds

While on a recent weekend getaway to San Antonio, TX, I stayed in a charming Bed & Breakfast in a historic area (O’Casey’s Bed and Breakfast, 225 W Craig Pl, San Antonio, TX 78212).  Of course being a CHEAP blonde, I booked a last minute special through Expedia.com.  It was decorated with beautiful antiques and the food was delicious!

Sitting at the breakfast table one morning there was a group of women who had flown in from all over the U.S. to have a girls shopping trip together.  They sat there and told me how they had been to 10 different resale shops the day before .. of course I had to ask for pictures of what they found and prices.  Ok, I did not reveal that they were talking to one of  the cheapest blondes in the U.S.!   It got me to thinking that all shopping, whether it be retail, thrifting, antiquing or resale comes down to marketing/display.  I even asked them if they considered stopping at a thrift store and they all said “no, that is not any fun!”.   I honestly had to head straight to a San Antonio Goodwill Thrift Store to see if I could find similar items for lower prices.

Lets admit upfront that there isn’t all of the “shabby chic vintage charm” while shopping in a thrift store, you have to look past the white walls, laminate floors, metal displays and screaming kids to find the treasures.  Yes, you have to dig to find the good stuff.   I have been on a “vintage” silver plate kick lately and I was thrilled with their selection.

My favorite find of the day were these extremely tarnished silver plate trivets for only $5.99.  I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with them but I knew that I could not leave them there.

  • Shop with several themes in mind.

Next we headed to Goodwill (Riveroaks) another one of our favorite Houston thrift store locations!

“I shop on shopgoodwill.com alot and one day while on fb, your link/profile page came up and I immediately was curious (such a cute, unique name: too cheap blondes) so I clicked on your page and fell in love with yall and what yall do. I was thrilled, even more so to be led to your blog, where I was educated on tips, locations, and benefits to shopping thrift stores and goodwill. I have been following you for quite awhile and love to check out your post and videos. When I realized that I had to travel to Houston to visit MD Andersons, for my first follow-up visit, my desire was to hopefully visit one of your favorite stores. I would have never imagined being blessed to actually meet yall, but w as blessed even beyond my desire or imagination when you volunteered to pick me up and take me shopping with you. I was estatic and I will never forget your kindness and hospitality in making a dream come true. I know some people may think that it’s a silly dream, but not to me, because, for some reason, I’m passionate about treasure hunting in thrift stores. Boy, was I ever so pleased with the 2 stores that you carried me to. I’m actually still blown away with the concept of the Family Thrift outlets. I just wish Mississippi had these stores to bless all the folks here that have need of goods but are on very limited income. Thanks for giving me tips as we shopped and making me feel special. I am humbled by your generosity. I also love that you stress to “pass it on” by donating items that I no longer use or need. I would feel like I was in a dream if I could ever do what yall do, and I am so thankful for the opportunity that you two lovely, giving, classy ladies blessed with. Please keep up the good work and just know that yall are making a difference in people’s lives by educating the public on the benefits of shopping goodwill and thrift stores. Gosh, I had a blast and yall made my medical trip all worth it. I just love yall and look forward to every fb post, video and blog post. Too Cheap Blondes Are My New Favorite “go-to” site. Again, I’m humbled and so happy that your precious daughters enjoyed our time together….to God be ALL the glory. HE is good, Faithful and loving. Suzanne”

Building a professional wardrobe may feel a bit overwhelming at first, especially since a limited budget is usually what most people have to deal with.  We are going to share with you how we put together an  professional closet at a fraction of the retail cost!  We found almost $2,000 worth of name brand clothing for under $100 at Goodwill!

We recently worked with Goodwill Houston and “Check This Out Houston” to help a worthy military veteran put together an unbelievable professional wardrobe.   She works in a conservative work environment and needs to dress the part, so with that in mind, here are a few of our pointers we shared with her.

1.  Start by looking for high quality fabrics and lined clothing that is constructed properly, these will hang better on you.

2.  Start with these basic essential pieces that you can build on and change up with accessories.
  • Power suit
  • Blazer
  • Pencil skirt
  • Silk blouse
  • Sheath dress
3.  Every professional woman must have one statement power suit in her wardrobe.   Our veteran immediately fell in love with this blue/gray suit.  The color looked dynamite with her coloring and fit her like it was custom made, priced at only $14.99!

Next we found the invaluable, chic black dress . . . remember the majority of dresses are priced at $9.99 at Goodwill, but we found this amazing David Meister dress in the boutique section for $19.99, retails around $300.

This stunning silk suit by Albert Nipon was only $14.99!   It can we worn together or as seperates.

Did you know that Goodwill Houston is one of the top resources in our area that helps veterans as they re-integrate into the civilian labor market after military service or face some other barrier to conventional employment?   Most people don’t and neither did this bubbly, vivacious veteran!   She has had quite a few struggles the past few years, her daughter and her were even homeless for a period of time.  She was shopping in Goodwill one day and read about the services that Goodwill offers to veterans.   Watch her full story May 9th on “Check This Out Houston” on ABC 13 at noon . . . make sure you have a tissue, it is a tear jerker.   You could see her countenance change when she put on a high-quality suit, she not only looked amazing but you could tell she felt confident!   We helped find her a high-end, high-quality wardrobe that is perfect for her job in a law office and as she studies to take her bar exam.

Goodwill Industries of Houston combines employment services with family financial strengthening services for veterans and their households.   They also assist female homeless veterans and homeless veterans with dependent children by providing employment services and referrals to housing and supportive services.  Goodwill also provides case management and temporary financial assistance for low-income veteran families who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. Financial assistance for child care, transportation, rental assistance, utility-fee payment assistance, security deposits, utility deposits, moving costs, and emergency supplies are also available for eligible veterans.  Assistance also includes applying for VA benefits and other programs.  Goodwill also helps homeless veterans (unsheltered, temporary housing, facing eviction) find employment, as well as provides employment services to veterans who are currently incarcerated and are within 18 months of release, or have been released from incarceration in the last 6 months.  For more information click HERE.

What’s my best thrift store find EVER?  While you can certainly find all kinds of priceless treasures in thrift stores, my best find didn’t come with a label or a price, it’s Jen!  Who would have ever thought I’d find a best friend in a thrift store!  Hours of hard work, dedication, and more hours of work over the past 2 years has led to a great friendship.

How it happened, I was part of a thrift store study group being conducted by grad students at Rice University.  When I asked who else they were interviewing for the study, they told me a girl named Jen Meneely who had recently been featured in the Houston Chronicle.  It still gives me chills to this day when I tell people that it was less than 24 hours after I read that article that I saw her in line at a Goodwill store in the Heights.  I would have NEVER known who she was if it wasn’t for reading the article and seeing her picture the evening before.  To me, that is fate!   CLICK HERE to read all about her (shhhh, don’t tell, but she wasn’t following her own tips to not shop on Wednesdays, the senior discount day…ha)!

Since Wednesdays are senior citizen discount days at Goodwill, I brought my mom with me to save $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and get the extra 30% savings.  There was a long line behind us that day and I kept thinking the girl several people back in line looked similar to the lady in the Chronicle.  I couldn’t remember her name, and she certainly wasn’t as glamorous as her Chronicle picture, but I kept looking at her and in my mind I thought, “I think that is her.”.   I finally walked to the back of the line and introduced myself.  She was cordial, though not super warm and friendly, but I gave her my card and told her I had a blog “Shop with Pippa” that was all about thrift store shopping.  Much to my surprise she sent me a message that night telling me how much she liked the blog and gave me her contact information with an invitation to get together some time for lunch.  We talked on the phone a couple of days later for over an hour, met a few weeks later for lunch, ate as quick as possible, and were off shopping within about 30 minutes!  HERE is our very first shopping trip together (I didn’t even spell her name correctly!).

So, without further adieu, Happy Anniversary to the Queens of Thrift, Too Cheap Blondes!  Neither one of us could have had any idea where this friendship would lead.  As a result of that fateful day two years ago, we have helped so many people, promoted multiple Houston charities, had a blast being thrift store cool, not made a dime with our blog (thank you to both of our supportive husbands!), and best of all, have had so much fun!

Another bonus from the day I met Jen were these vintage hand painted dishes that I found.  I now consider these plates my anniversary dishes.  I always have loved yellow, it is such a happy color, but now these dishes have extra special meaning to me.  I think they are the perfect blend of Jen and Pippa, the 1950’s plates are symbolic of Jen’s love of vintage items, and yellow is for my “happy/sunshine” view of life.

These plates caught my eye for one reasonI LOVE YELLOW!    What a sunny, happy and fun color!!!”

Hand Painted Vintage California Santa Anita “Provincial Apple” dishes found @ Houston Goodwill cheap blondes blog

I love the contrast of the yellow apple in the center and the trim against the brown hand painted background.  To quote my mother-in-law, “You need another set of dishes like you need a hole in the head!”, but I couldn’t resist these, especially with the price tag of 12 plates for $13.99.   Each dish has been hand painted with visible brushstrokes, so there is a great depth of color on each unique plate.     Goodwill thrifting is awesome!

The perfect complement for these plates are these nubby textured yellow place mats I had recently bought at Conroe Assistance League…8 for $9.00.    I can’t wait to use these!

RESEARCH:

Beautiful Vintage California Dishes “Provincial Apple” Yellow, Signed “Vreni”.  The unique pattern, Provincial Apple, was made in the 1950s by Santa Anita Pottery, a division of National Silver Co. of Los Angeles, California.  They were in business from 1939 though the early 1960s.  The pattern was offered in brown and white with yellow and also with pink, and was created by Swiss designer Vreni Wawra.”

We were excited to come across this darling “Young, Fabulous and Broke” dress for only $5.99 at a San Antonio Goodwill store.   Look at the details of the attached “necklace”.   At these prices you can’t say NO!

Young Fabulous & Broke is inspired by Young Hollywood. I love the laid-back LA style, so I wanted the designs to reflect that sort of easy going and free flowing bohemian lifestyle. The collections embody wearable boho-chic styles and are perfect for casual or dressy occasions,” said Heidi Cornell McKenna.

Austin’s Blue Hanger Goodwill Outlet, better known as a shop by the pound store, is quite the experience!

It is a huge warehouse, with rows and rows of bins filled with clothing and household items.  Everything is priced by the pound ($1.39 when I visited in the fall of 2014).   The bins are rolled out all throughout the day and shoppers sort through them until are completely picked over.

Here is the exciting part, they roll the bins out with sheets covering the contents.  The shoppers all line up, the sheets are removed, an employee gives a sign, and everyone sprints to go through the bins.   There are no signs explaining the process but other shoppers will let you know if you don’t follow the rules.
