Recent Favorite Designer Thrift Store Finds

Maybe we make it look like every time we walk into a thrift store we find amazing stuff, but honestly we don’t.  There are those days when we walk out buying nothing . . . yes, absolutely nothing.  We have many shopping trips like this but we can’t post that on Facebook or the blog, that would be boring!

All that said, here is a compilation of some of our favorite recent thrift store treasures that stand out above all the other finds.

houston thrift store contest winner

It was a VERY tough decision, but we’ve chosen our winners for this week’s Family Thrift Center Outlet shopping trip.  You read that right, winners!   We read each and every one of your entries and you made it so hard to choose!  Your stories were amazing,  many were about overcoming adversity, some in the middle of a crisis, a few health challenges, some of you entered for a friend, others wanted to learn about fashion and a lot of you wanted to just have a fun day of thrift store shopping with us.  We honestly wish that we could take you all but that isn’t possible.  We decided we couldn’t pick just one person so we chose two!  Shea H. will go shopping with us this Wednesday and we are still waiting for a response back for the winner of the next week!  Congratulations, you deserve it!

Top Cheap Tips for Shopping and Decorating with Thrift Store Finds

Tip No. 1:  Keep an open mind for anything and everything

Use Pinterest or magazines when your shopping for inspiration.   Most things that look like junk when decorated correctly make things appear cool and chic!  This unique fossil, found for only .99 at Goodwill Houston,  is a perfect example. “Definitely the oldest thing I’ve ever bought @goodwillhouston, by oh, about 65 million years. I couldn’t pass it up….because #itwas99cents!”   Follow us on Pinterest HERE.

Tip No. 2:  Know your style.  You have to know what you like and don’t like – otherwise everything just looks like junk.  I LOVE sparkle!  Anything metallic such as glass, silver & gold.

Don’t be afraid to repurpose!  If you fall in love with a unique item but you do not need or want it for its intended purpose, get creative or “google” it to see what others have done with it.

Here is a perfect example of finding sparkly, unique things to help you organize an area.  The “tray” is really a small framed mirror, found for only $2.92 @ Family Thrift Store.  I am totally in love with the silver creamer, which I filled with Q-tips. The gaudy gold jewelry box which is a perfect asset for this vignette, then add a few more glass accessories , not even sure what to put in them yet but they complete the look I was going for.

Jen and I had a hard time answering this question:  “What was your favorite find of the week?”

This week we had a reporter and photographer from the Houston Chronicle follow us (we will let you know when the story will go to print).  They were curious about how the “Cheap Blondes” work?  Do we shop together?  Are we competitive with each other?  Why do we have our blog?

Jen found a great leather tote purse by PURE COLLECTION for $2.00 at Family Thrift Outlet, we did not recognize the name but the leather felt amazing and we liked everything about it.  The photographer asked what it was worth (we had no idea), so we did some research on Google and WOW….it retailed for about $375!

After doing some research on this purse we realized this $2.00 find was worth about $375!

As we were leaving the store and walking down the aisle doing a last minute “check,” I thought this coat felt so soft…yes, cashmere feels amazing!  Oh my, I think my heart skipped a beat when I realized it was a Cole Haan cashmere coat!  This jacket retailed for $539, Jen and I found it for $2.00 at the Family Thrift OUTLET Store!

We also did a “Houston Check this Out” segment with Goodwill this week and we came across these AMAZING Carvela “Anita” shoes!  Unfortunately, neither one of us have size 6 feet! One of our models was able to score these amazing shoes for only $24.99 (they retailed for $500+).

This past week we found some amazing items at several different thrift store, it was almost hard to choose when asked “What was your favorite find of the week?”

Jen found this vintage circa 1990 Ferragamo crossbody handbag for $2.00 at Family Thrift Outlet (Little York).    A similar bag, in black, is being sold for $450 online. “This belt-bag in red leather features a 46-inch, removable gold-tone belcher chain with two platform shoe charms, two belt-loops and a faille ribbon with three gold-tone buttons, each with three shoes in relief.”   This purse is not in mint condition and will need to be professionally cleaned.   If for some reason the leather is not able to be salvaged the chain itself will make a fantastic necklace or belt.

Pippa found this men’s Burberry jacket for $2.00 at Family Thrift Outlet (Little York), similar style sold for $795.  The inside of the collar was absolutely filthy but for that price it was hard to pass up, knowing she could at least TRY to clean it.   DAWN dish soap is her secret weapon to get out almost any spot or stain … and it worked!

What Was Your Favorite Find of the Week?

Pippa and I have what we call our Monday-morning Brain Storming Session.  We call each other, discuss what we have going on that week, talk about any new fashion trends we’ve noticed, peruse through Pinterest, adding things to our shared boards, and then go to work shopping the thrift stores trying to make our ideas and inspirations come to life.  This week we are working on the following:

  • Wardrobe Contest that will begin this week, gifting a deserving woman in the Houston area (details to follow) with a thrifted wardrobe, styled by us!
  • “Too Cheap Tuesdays” begins with Family Thrift Outlet Stores.   (Here is a link to that article)
  • Halloween Costumes from everyday clothes in a thrift store, Thursday, with Rita Garcia, FOX 26 News.
  • “Thursday Thrift Challenge” begins Thursday, with ABC Patricia Lopez, “Stretch Your Dollar” (details to follow).
  • “Preparing for Holiday Parties,” Saturday, with Courtney Zavala, KPRC Channel 2,  “Morning Show.”

We always end our conversation with the question, “What was your favorite find of the week?”

Pippa found both this suede A-Line skirt, fully lined, by Ann Taylor for $2 at the Family Thrift Outlet (6724 Hillcroft St) and a black DKNY silk tie front blouse for $2, and paired them with a Burberry scarf (gift) and Tory Burch Boots (Nordstrom Sale).   Pippa wore this outfit from 6 A.M. until 11 P.M., traveling by plane all day, and then dining in the evening at a 5-star restaurant.  This outfit was not only stylish, but warm and comfortable!

Here are some more ideas from Pinterest (follow us HERE) on how to wear a suede skirt:

Jen found this vintage purple and gold dress for $2.00  (6724 Hillcroft St.).  Vintage clothing is usually much higher quality than today’s ready-to-wear clothing and is so well constructed, it can many times be comparable to our current couture clothing.  Using Oscar de la Renta 2014 Runway show as an inspiration, Jen is going to do a make-over to convert this dress into a skirt.  Jen loved this dress because of the vibrant colors and attention to detail.  Once she converts it to a ball skirt, it’s going to be fabulous paired with a t-shirt, turtle neck or button-up blouse.
