The Cottage Shop has an upscale look!

The phone rings, “What are you doing?”  This is code for, “Do you want to shop?”   Wanting to change up our thrifting routine this week, we decided to follow our tip #9, visit multiple thrift stores in one shopping trip, they’re usually near each other.  Spicing it up even more, we put a 30-minute time limit on each store to see what we could find.  We didn’t necessarily look for stuff we wanted to purchase, but focused more on finding things to share with you guys to show you that you can almost always find something at most thrift stores.

TIP #9: Pick an area of town and go to 3-4 thrift stores since they are often near each other. (11 Best Tips)

For our challenge, went to Goodwill (2030 Westheimer), Cottage Thrift Shop (811 Westheimer), Charity Guild of Catholic Women (1203 Lovett Blvd.), and the Assistance League of Houston (1902 Commonwealth St).  We even threw in a bonus surprise store at the end!

From the moment we walked in the door, we loved this store!   It was decorated beautifully, the staff was very friendly and we were pleasantly surprised to find tables and tables of brand new items still in the package for thrift store prices! (A local boutique donated a bunch of their inventory.)  We both did some Christmas shopping for stockings and gifts.

We weren’t expecting this store to be closed and not wanting our shopping adventure to end, we decided to head over to one of Houston’s best kept secrets … Craftex.   No, it is not a thrift store, think Hobby Lobby on steroids!  They also have a dedicated Christmas store that is almost overwhelming but we never fail to walk out empty handed.

Here are a few more pictures from the “Houston Check This Out”  Goodwill segment that we recently did.    Jen and I work on finding holiday items all year long!

We incorporated our Goodwill finds into this home decor

We incorporated our Goodwill finds into this home décor

This exquisite Christmas village is made up entirely of thrift store finds.   Most of the pieces are Department 56, which sell for around $100 each, we found them for about 5% of the retail price at Houston Goodwill stores.  We did mix in a few other brands, just make sure they are the same size and scale.

Holiday Entertaining on a Budget from Goodwill Houston!

We were super excited when Goodwill asked us to help them with a holiday segment for Check This Out Houston!  Since we usually focus on fashion, getting the opportunity to decorate was a real treat.

For the holiday tablescape, we started by using what the homeowners already owned, elegant white and silver China, stacked on their heirloom charger plates.  We added our thrifted Christopher Radko Christmas tree plates, a Christmas ornament and a real pinecone (believe it or not, purchased at Goodwill!) to finish off each place setting.

Before and After

Before and After

Another way we were able to incorporate our Goodwill pieces with the homeowners items was by stacking a snowman candy dish on top of a few cake stands, and again we added a few pine cones to tie it all together.

For our table’s centerpiece, we used a silver punchbowl (part of a full set that included a platter and cups that we picked up for $24.99) and filled it with Christmas ornaments along with more of our natural elements.

One question we hear all the time is what store do you shop at and we can honestly say that we shop all over Houston.   We love the challenge of stopping by a new store and finding something awesome!   We work on buying holiday décor all year long!  A great example is this gold deer and angel that we purchased in April.

All proceeds from the thrift shop help children in the community!  From June 2012 through May 2013, Operation School Bell provided clothing and shoe vouchers to 4,244 students in the six Montgomery County independent school districts: Conroe, Magnolia, Montgomery, New Caney, Splendora and Willis. In addition, clothing vouchers were provided to counselors at Montgomery County agencies for the emergency dressing of children at various times during the year.

Reindeer, Angels and Trees ~ Christmas at a Thrift Store

Jen and I had just finished a very non eventful day of thrift shopping, we had found almost nothing and were at the check-out with a couple of items.   I asked Jen to wait for me while I went to use the restroom but before I could even make it there I saw this Fabulous gold reindeer for $12.99, that lights up and still had the original tags on it …. Woo Hoo!

This is how "Too Cheap Blondes" roll at a thrift store!

This is how “Too Cheap Blondes” roll at a thrift store!

Jen helped me get it into my car and then I remembered “oh yeah, I still need to use the restroom” so we headed back in the thrift store and once again, before I could make it there, they had just put out more Christmas stuff!   Look at all of these gorgeous trees, another reindeer and an angel.

More Christmas items ...

More Christmas items …

Brand New with tags! This beautiful gold angel lights up.

So our “find almost nothing” thrift day turned into a major score of Christmas items!
