houston thrift store contest winner

We have chosen the winner of the U.S. Thrift Store Shopping Contest with Jen and Pippa , virtual Family Thrift Center Outlet shopping trip … Janine P, of the windy city of Chicago!

We read each and every one of your entries and you made it so hard to choose!  Your stories were amazing,  many were about overcoming adversity, some in the middle of a crisis, a few health challenges, some of you entered for a friend, others wanted to learn about fashion and a lot of you just wanted to have us thrift shop for you.   We will definitely be working on a story about helping people get out of the yoga pant rut, this was the number one dilemma we heard from you.

Congratulations Janine P!  We can’t wait to see your style board on Pinterest and start shopping for you!  We will keep you posted on this virtual shopping trip and stay tuned for the next contest.

We were lucky enough to get a super exclusive sneak peek at the amazing selection of items that are going to be available at The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary Chic Boutique After Sale from April 15th – April 18th, 2015.  “I feel like a kid in a candy store who’s been told they can’t taste anything!”, Jen exclaimed as we flipped through hundreds of high-end couture names such as:

  • Chanel
  • Escada
  • Carolina Herrara
  • Marni
  • Christian Lacroix
  • Valentino
  • Oscar de la Renta
  • Christian Dior

…just to name a few!

We are going to start by showing you the most expensive, exquisite, divine and delicious clothing!

(some of the clothing still have the original price tags from $100’s up to almost $8000)

We are super excited about a fun day of thrift store shopping with you!

In case you missed it, here is our Houston Chronicle Article “Thrifty Blondes”.

Here are some of our favorite tips for shopping the Family Thrift Center Outlet stores.

  • “You don’t need to get there when they open on Thursdays.”  We usually arrive around 11 a.m., after the store has been open a few hours.  The store is really crowded until around noon, after that, it seems to calm down.   In our opinion, we prefer to go after the “morning rush.”  The employees are continually putting out new merchandise on Thursday and Friday, so you can find the “good stuff” for a couple of days before the stock starts running thin.
  • Some people say, “I never find anything!”  We go through hundreds, if not thousands, of items every time we go shopping in order to find one or two designer pieces of clothing.  Do not get frustrated when you walk into a thrift store and don’t find that “amazing deal” within a few minutes.  Jen and I spend hours going through every single hanger.  Sometimes we will come across a gorgeous piece of clothing within minutes, but it usually takes a good amount of time to find that treasure!   Never give up!  If you’re patient and dedicated, I promise that you will find a treasure!
  • There are no dressing rooms or mirrors.  Wear something comfortable so you can try a jacket or blouse over what you are wearing.
  • Finally, be prepared to shop with some highly competitive shoppers.  There are regulars who treat thrift shopping like a sport.

Our Tour Through Blogland …

Recently Cherie James from www.StyleNudge.com was so sweet to feature us on her blog as one of her featured bloggers on her “Tour Through Blogland”.    A few weeks ago, I somehow stumbling across her blog, and could not stop reading until I read every single post she had ever done!   We love her eclectic style risk of mixing vintage with modern, please be sure and check it out.   We loved the idea behind the tour through blogland and thought this is would be a great way to share a little bit of information with you all about our blogging process .  All bloggers who are participating in the tour are asked the following questions and so here goes:

  1. What am I working on?  Some of our upcoming events that we are focusing on right now are promoting Houston’s oldest running rummage sale (which is HUGE) with one of our local news stations.  We will be visiting the rummage sale location a couple of days before it opens to the public and styling a few models for a news segment.  We also have another news segment coming up for a weekend morning news program where we’ll show how to look fabulous for your holiday parties on a thrift shop budget.   ABC “Stretch Your Dollar” is going to do a weekly segment with us, asking viewers to send photo’s, via social media, that we create in a thrift store.  We will post the store and price, this will be added to a running slideshow each week and linked back to our blog.
  2. How does my work differ from others in it’s genre?  We think what sets Too Cheap Blondes apart from other fashion and thrift bloggers is the fact that not only are we are able to create on-trend outfits with a seriously tiny budget, usually under $20 from head-to-toe, but almost 100% of our outfits are made up of high-quality, high-end, designer pieces.  We rarely feature items from Target, Forever 21, Express, Banana Republic, etc.
  3. Why do I write/create what I do?  We truly have a passion for thrift shopping.  On average, Pippa and I go thrifting 4 – 5 times per week.  We see so many amazing items in thrift stores and, obviously, we can’t buy it all, so we want to share the wealth and let women know that they can look great without spending a fortune on their wardrobe.
  4. How does my writing/creating process work?  Typically Pippa and I have what we call our Monday-morning Brain Storming Session.  We call each other, discuss what we have going on that week, talk about any new fashion trends we’ve noticed, peruse through Pinterest, adding things to our shared boards, and then go to work shopping the thrift stores trying to make our ideas and inspirations come to life.
