abc 13 houston bulk family thrift store pound shop

There are so many reasons to shop a Bulk type of thrift store outlet!

Maybe you are shopping as an individual or a family but there are so many other reasons to shop a bulk, by-the-pound store:

  • yourself / family
  • crafters, fabric or projects (you can’t find fabric by the yard at these prices)
  • costumes / halloween
  • professional reseller’s
  • local charities
  • homeless shelters

Pamela, one of our shoppers, found amazing deals (many that we passed right over)  She was looking for high end fabrics to remake into pillows or crafts for her home.   She bought 23 items for just .24 each (including tax).

From the comments we are getting, let us clarify any confusion you have about Family Thrift.

There are now “3 tiers” of thrifting at Family Thrift in Houston, yes this is our own personal thrift shop lingo we just created!

  • Regular Retail Family Thrift Center Stores
  • Outlet Thrift Stores (where everything starts at only $2 on Thursdays and then is marked down to just .25 on Wednesdays).
  • Bulk, By-the-Pound Thrift Store

Here is the link to all of their stores, please take the time to decipher the difference in the stores.  Family Thrift Center Store Locations HERE.

This store is not only a great resource for individual shoppers but also shelters, homeless and even professional resellers.

Common thrift store misconceptions include the items have bed bugs, fleas or etc… please just use a washing machine to clean your items!  When you go to a restaurant you use napkin linens others have wiped their mouths with, at a hotel you are sleeping on pillows, a mattress and sheets others have used .. wash or sanitize the items!

houston family thrift clothing by the pound

Clothing by the pound is a major supplier of wholesale, recycled used clothing, garment and apparel to many so the bulk pricing can be as low as .15 a pound!

If you have any type of rude comment DO NOT post it here, keep it to yourself!

If you haven’t bought your Halloween costume and are looking for materials, or perhaps you are just looking for a great place to get deals on name brand fashions, Too Cheap Blondes have found a pretty neat and affordable way to do both.

It’s called shopping by the pound, and you can do it at a new place off Little York Rd., near Airline in north Houston.

The Family Thrift Outlet Bulk Store works exactly as it sounds: you buy clothes, shoes and accessories by the pound from the copious bins throughout the store.

There are only a handful of these type of bulk thrift stores in the nation and this one is the first in Houston. Here you pay by the pound, starting at 50 cents a pound and as you buy more, the price drops to 15 cents a pound.

Where does the clothing come from? This is the clearance center for the outlet. This is like a third level.

Here’s how the prices break down:

  • 10-25 lbs. – 39 cents per lb.
  • 25-100 lbs. – 29 cents per lb.
  • 100+ lbs. – 15 cents per lb.

Before you shop, prepare by packing some hand sanitizer, as shoppers say sifting through clothes can be a little dirty. Give yourself lots of time to dig, an hour and a half may not be enough to find the best deals.

Also, wear form-fitting clothes. The store does not have a dressing room, so it will be easier for you to try clothes on with a little planning.

Shoppers say you need to be patient when shopping by the pound and always start from the back where you have a better chance of finding treasure than in the front bins, which are picked through first.

  • The Family Thrift Outlet Bulk Store is located at:
  • 127 Little York Rd.
  • Open from 9am to 6pm Fridays and Saturdays
  • Sundays from noon to 6pm.

Jen and I recently did a TV segment for “Check This Out Houston” showcasing holiday items, both fashion and home décor, all found from Goodwill.   We film these segments with the hope that they will encourage you to shop at your local Goodwill store.  While we buy seasonal items all year long, we know it is hard to purchase a Santa bowl or Christmas platter in the summertime when it is 100+ degrees outside, but we have learned that buying holiday items off season is the best way to find unique pieces!   We love to share with you what we find on our shopping adventures, to encourage you to thrift shop, but also want you to know that your donations make a huge difference in our community!

During our numerous segments we have filmed with Goodwill this past year, we have had the honor to meet many of the people whose lives have been forever changed through the job training, education and placement services that Goodwill provides.  From veterans, to those who haven’t been in the job force for years, people with disabilities, those formerly incarcerated, recovering addicts, and many others who have a barrier to conventional employment, Goodwill has been there.

This lovely veteran had been homeless for over a year before getting help from the Goodwill Job Connection Service Center, she had not purchased any new clothing during that period and we provided our style services to put together a professional wardrobe to start her new career as an executive secretary.   She looked absolutely amazing and you could tell she also felt confident and beautiful!

As you are cleaning out the clutter in your home this holiday season, you are helping to transform lives in your community.  Every donation creates jobs.   Jen and I are quite proud of the fact that 95.5 cents of each dollar goes into the community programs.

Here is what might be the most shocking about what we have pictured, all of the items that we used we already had in our closet, all thrifted of course!    We are a broken record regarding our  “11 BEST Tips for Thrift Store Shopping”…they work!   Shop for basics, look for individual pieces, do NOT focus on putting together an outfit, thrifting takes time and do not pay for than 10% of retail price.  It’s unrealistic to think that you’re going to walk into a thrift store and find the perfect pieces for an outfit, all in your size, in one trip…it just rarely happens that way.  Work on building your wardrobe with basic pieces. rather than shop for outfits, we happened to have all of the individual pieces that each of these looks required already in our closets.  If you study the outfits, they’re all made up of basics (solid blazers, skinny jeans (white, black and blue), sparkly tank, basic white tees) with the exceptions of a few pieces (scarves and shoes).

Do you have a favorite outfit?  #1, #2 or #3?

river oaks garden club

The River Oaks Garden Club’s Pink Elephant sale this year broke all previous sales and attendance records!!  Attendance at the event was nearly double from last year!  The sale’s revenue was also way up over previous years’!!  We received an e-mail from the River Oaks Garden Club telling us that they had people in line starting at 9 p.m. the night before the sale!  Folks, this is a rummage sale, not the release of a new iPhone!  Outstanding!!!  We heard that it took about 45 minutes to get the 9 a.m. line of people inside the door, and then the line didn’t slow down until sometime in the afternoon.   The sale had steady attendance throughout Friday and Saturday.

Here’s out favorite part of the story, when the ladies of the Garden Club asked people how they heard about the sale, many said they had been coming for years, but the vast majority said Channel 13, Facebook, or the Internet.  According to the ladies, all of those are directly attributable to Too Cheap Blondes.
We are so floored and thrilled that the sale did so well, especially since all of the proceeds go directly back into the Houston community.  We are so proud to have helped the Club get the word out about their sale and couldn’t be more pleased with the phenomenal results.
This is why we blog about thrifting…stories like this!  We love it when the opportunity to give back arises and look forward to working with the Garden Club next year as well.

You know we love to share with you where to find the best deals in Houston.  Understandably, we were quite excited when we were asked by ABC Channel 13’s Patricia Lopez to do a segment covering Houston’s oldest running rummage sale!  We hope you enjoy this unprecedented sneak peek of the River Oaks Garden Club’s annual Pink Elephant Sale.     When Jen and I stopped by the staging area yesterday, everyone was hard at work preparing for this sale.  The lovely ladies of the Club graciously allowed us to take pictures to show you, in advance, a sample of the items that will be for sale at the Pink Elephant Sale, located at the Bayou City Event Center, featuring 21,750 square feet of shopping!   We have so much to share with you we are breaking this up into two segments, housewares and clothing.

The “Stretch your Dollar” segment will air on Thursday, October 16, ABC Channel 13 at 5:45 a.m. and 4:55 p.m.

History:

The forerunner of this fantastic sale was known as the River Oaks Green Market. It was started during WWII to make “bundles for Britain,” to sell produce from victory gardens, and to resell hard-to-find items. From these modest beginnings, the sale has grown into an annual event that draws customers from all over Houston and surrounding areas.

Proceeds from the Pink Elephant Sale benefit the Houston community through education, conservation, environmental programs, beautification projects, and scholarships.

“The THRIFT SHOP Challenge” Pinterest ~ vs ~ TOO CHEAP BLONDES with Mirror Mirror

It is so much fun to film thrifting segments with Rebecca Spera, the host of “Mirror Mirror.”   She is always bubbly, everything looks amazing on her, and yes, she is just as fun in real life as she is on her show!   Her true passion is shopping for bargains – no wonder she loves thrift store shopping!    Rebecca also focuses on women’s self-esteem and offers advice on ways to develop self confidence.   This goes hand-in-hand with our message, “there is no shame in thrift store shopping!”

Oh wait, I have to give you one more reason why we think Rebecca is a fashion expert…she recently interviewed one of America’s style icons, Sarah Jessica Parker, how amazing is that?!

For this challenge we were going for a “menswear-inspired” look.   What do you think?

mirror mirror thrift styleWhen we film, we always try to use current, inspirational photos.  We use magazine photos to prove that you can find today’s fashion in a thrift store.    We were really trying to go for this look from Neiman Marcus but it wasn’t all coming together that day, so we improvised.
