Too Cheap Tuesdays in Pasadena … Longchamp, ZARA, Brooks Brothers & Black Label Ralph

A question that we hear all the time is “which outlet do you prefer to shop at?”  Honestly, we decide which store to shop at depending on where we are in Houston on a Thursday.   The stores are spread all throughout town (and all over Texas) so some of them are “geographically challenging” for us but we ALWAYS find a treasure, no matter what store we shop at.  Remember, it usually just takes time to look through everything.    Today we are showing you what we found at the Pasadena outlet store last year … and it was awesome so we will definitely stop by again when we are in the area!

Also, Houston is getting unusually cold weather the past few weeks and there are racks of coats for only $2!

When we share our “11 BEST Tips for Thrift Store Shopping”, you will see why we think the tweed jacket and dress are perfect staples for building a wardrobe.

  1. Don’t try to put together an outfit or you will get frustrated.  Look for individual pieces and then try to build an outfit.
  2. Focus on dresses, jackets and skirts…this is where you normally get the most value for your money.

Outlet Price Per Item
Thursdays $2.00 per item
Fridays $1.75 per item
Saturdays $1.50 per item
Sundays $1.25 per item
Mondays $1.00 per item
Tuesdays 50¢ per item
Wednesdays 25¢ per item

Here are some of our favorite tips for shopping the Family Thrift Center Outlet stores.

  • “You don’t need to get there when they open on Thursdays.”  We usually arrive around 11 a.m., after the store has been open a few hours.  The store is really crowded until around noon, after that, it seems to calm down.   In our opinion, we prefer to go after the “morning rush.”  The employees are continually putting out new merchandise on Thursday and Friday, so you can find the “good stuff” for a couple of days before the stock starts running thin.
  • Some people say, “I never find anything!”  We go through hundreds, if not thousands, of items every time we go shopping in order to find one or two designer pieces of clothing.  Do not get frustrated when you walk into a thrift store and don’t find that “amazing deal” within a few minutes.  Jen and I spend hours going through every single hanger.  Sometimes we will come across a gorgeous piece of clothing within minutes, but it usually takes a good amount of time to find that treasure!   Never give up!  If you’re patient and dedicated, I promise that you will find a treasure!
  • There are no dressing rooms or mirrors.  Wear something comfortable so you can try a jacket or blouse over what you are wearing.
  • Finally, be prepared to shop with some highly competitive shoppers.  There are regulars who treat thrift shopping like a sport.

Easy makeover on this thrift store find!

This is our kind of makeover … scissors, tape and 3 minutes!  We found this London Fog Trench Coat at the Family Thrift Outlet for $2, cut off the sleeves, taped the seams up, so easy!

We might make this look easy but some of these looks are quite challenging and as you can see we do not always hit the mark.

When trying to recreate an outfit, it does not need to be a perfect match here are a few of our TIPS:

  • If you can’t copy the entire outfit, take out one or two pieces to match the look, start with color and shape.
  • Try to keep the elements the same.
  • Shop your own closet first.
  • Be creative and improvise!

Here is a 2-piece vintage sequin skirt/top set from Tootsies, a high-end specialty store in Houston.   This probably originally retailed for well over $1,000.  Worn together it is overwhelming, but if you look at this set as separates, it is quite spectacular!   The top, after some tailoring, will be a gorgeous tunic dress, similar to the Marchesa for $5,515.

Here is what might be the most shocking about what we have pictured, all of the items that we used we already had in our closet, all thrifted of course!    We are a broken record regarding our  “11 BEST Tips for Thrift Store Shopping”…they work!   Shop for basics, look for individual pieces, do NOT focus on putting together an outfit, thrifting takes time and do not pay for than 10% of retail price.  It’s unrealistic to think that you’re going to walk into a thrift store and find the perfect pieces for an outfit, all in your size, in one trip…it just rarely happens that way.  Work on building your wardrobe with basic pieces. rather than shop for outfits, we happened to have all of the individual pieces that each of these looks required already in our closets.  If you study the outfits, they’re all made up of basics (solid blazers, skinny jeans (white, black and blue), sparkly tank, basic white tees) with the exceptions of a few pieces (scarves and shoes).

Do you have a favorite outfit?  #1, #2 or #3?

11 of the Best Thrift Store Tips

11 of the Best Tips for Thrift Store Shopping from Too Cheap Blondes.

Between our television segments and our daily blog posts, we realize that we are starting to sound like a broken record.   Following the rules almost 100% of the time, they have now become second nature!

Of course you can break a rule now and then, but these work!

Thrifting Tips:

  1. Don’t try to put together an outfit or you will get frustrated.  Look for individual pieces and then try to build an outfit.
  2. Focus on dresses, jackets and skirts…this is where you normally get the most value for your money.
  3. Skip lower end brands such as Target, Forever 21 and Walmart.
  4. Pay attention to fabrics…avoid synthetics.   Look for natural fibers such as silk, cotton and wool.
  5. You can usually find much better deals by “digging” rather than shopping from the boutique section of a thrift store.
  6. All thrift stores are not created equal.
  7. Look through Pinterest, magazines and fashion blogs to recreate trends.
  8. It doesn’t matter if you have 10 minutes or 2 hours, you can always find something you love!
  9. Pick an area of town and go to 3-4 thrift stores since they are often near each other.
  10. Hard Fast Rule:  NEVER pay more than 10% of retail price, we try to pay 5% or even less.
  11. Be open to finding anything!

Thrift Shopping for Holiday Looks

We, Jen and Pippa, being named the “Cheapest Housewives in Houston,” have always left the weekends open for family.  This past Saturday, however, we made an exception to film with Houston’s KPRC Channel 2 Morning Show with Courtney Zavala.  It was a fun segment featuring holiday wear found at thrift stores!

We felt very talk show “official” sitting on a couch!

Here are a few of the tips we shared:

  • We shopped exclusively at thrift shops.
  • You might not find it all the first time, make several trips.
  • Thrifting is a wardrobe-building process.
  • Holiday attire is usually only worn once, which means it’s usually practically brand new!  Try to save money on these pricey pieces!
